Regulations---How U.S/Chinese government use regulations to control the economy system?

Most governments have some control over their economy either by regulations or controlling resources. However, there are many different regulations to do it. The United States and China are representatives of two different groups--capitalist and communist.

http://media.lifehealthpro.com/
In order to control the economy, the U.S. federal government regulates enterprise by either directly or indirectly controlling prices. According to the article Regulation and Control in the U.S. Economy, U.S. federal government “has sought to prevent monopolies such as electric utilities from raising prices beyond the level that would ensure them reasonable profits”. Government usually create regulations in order to directly controlling the economic system.

Those regulations can limit economic growth in some degree and the value of a dollar. In some cases, those regulations also help government to control the stability of the country’s economy. Furthermore, the article claimed the government will adjust the taxes in order to limit the market. When the government raised the taxes, there is less producer willing to produce because there is less profit. That will lead to the decrease in supply and the increase in prices of the good.

Different from the United State, Chinese government have the most of the control in the country’s economic system by mostly directly control. According to Economic Freedom Rating - china Compared to Continent, China has a high “level of government interference in the economy” and people has less “economic freedom”. In my opinion, it make sense because of the government structure. Chinese government is control by only one political group and if they lost control on the economic system, people may greatly affected by outside gossip and cause the economic system to be unstable. In another word, the economic system will fall and people will suffer. Also, Time magazine state “Foreign businesses in China are voicing growing frustration about the country's heavily regulated market — a bureaucratic maze many say is designed deliberately to hamstring non-Chinese players to the advantage of their local competitors”. In this report, reporter pointed out the Chinese government have used regulations to limit the effect of foreign business in Chinese economic system.

All in all, the economic system is the based of a strong world power and most of the country will have some degree of control of their economic system. Most of those country were controlling the system either directly or indirectly by regulations or taxes.

In my future blog post I will be addressing Taxes in detail.

Sean Parker gives $250 million to immunotherapy

http://www.imuc.com/

If someone told you there was a safe treatment for cancer, wouldn’t you be all for it? Radiation and chemotherapy attack the body and make one frail and can immobilize those patients. Scientists have found a better way to treat cancer rather than using chemotherapy and radiation. Jayne O’Donnell, a reporter from USA Today writes about how Sean Parker, co-founder of Facebook, donated $250 million to six different cancer centers around the United States so they can research and do clinical trials using immunotherapy. Immunotherapy has gained more donors for research because it has shown its effectiveness in the drugs early stages.

Immunotherapy is a technique that enhances the body’s immune system so it can kill cancer cells more easily. In O'Donnell's article she explains how it was crucial for Sean Parker to donate to this new technique because his Institute for Immunotherapy now has funding for “high risk best ideas that may not get funded by the government”. Since this is a new technique the government is skeptical to give it funding because they are unsure of the results. But facts are facts, and 30%-40% of patients respond well to the treatment. There is no harm in trying this new advanced method, and for some the outcome can be life saving. I believe that since there is a pretty good chance that this treatment will work out for some patients I think immunotherapy should be more widely accepted in the medical community.

There are a few different types of Immunotherapy, so there are multiple options for a patient—that is if the patient's immune system hasn’t already been destroyed by other forms of treatment. Sean Parker complained that “Currently, immunotherapy is only approved as a treatment of last resort,” which means that a patient will receive immunotherapy after their body has been intoxicated with poison and radiation, meaning that a patients body is broken beyond repair by the time immunotherapy is even considered as a part of treatment. It’s a miracle that Sean Parker donated so much money to this treatment because now scientists can do more research and testing to prove to people that immunotherapy is an effective way to treat cancer and can be tried more easily on a day to day basis for patients.

Factors that go into how much money players can trade for their skill or value

SOURCE: http://aaww.org

Wouldn’t it be nice to make a living off of wearing a company’s logo on your clothes? I know what you’re thinking, ‘Sure, but no one does that’. True, no one has that exact title, but for some of the world’s top-paid golfers, you could easily argue that their endorsements have become a full time job. My source from cheatsheet.com uses factual evidence from forbes.com that shows how much the 5 highest paid golfers are making, and where that money is actually coming from. There comes a point for the biggest names in golf where they can completely stop playing the sport, and still be multi-millionaires, just by simply wearing a logo on their shirt.
Most people are aware of the insane amount of money the top PGA Tour professionals make every year. What most people also think is that the golf industry is a very unreliable profession, and that you can go from rich to nothing in a matter of a year if your play starts to slander. Although this is true for a majority of all golfers, there are a select few who, if they stopped playing golf all together, could still live life as multi-millionaires. How? One word: endorsements. One prime example is Tiger Woods. The golf phenomenon has only made $600,000 in the last year from actually playing golf (darn), “And yet, despite his current lack of game, nothing seems to prevent the 14-time Major champion from raking in the big bucks. In the last year, Tiger has brought in added $50 million to his purse in endorsement money alone. Nike still keeps Woods living large, to the tune of over $20 million a year.” So basically, Tiger made $50.6 million in 2015, and 98.8% of it came from endorsements. Even if he had not touched a golf club, he still would’ve lived smoothly at $50 million. But regardless, his title is still a ‘professional golfer’. Sounds to me like it should be ‘professional sponsor’, but what do I know?

It seems like the moral of the story is that if your talent throws you into the pool of top golfers in the world for even just a couple of years, you will be financially blessed for the rest of your life. This however, is not always the case. Geoff Ogilvy, a PGA Tour veteran who has won a U.S. Open and three World Golf Championships, has had a mediocre stretch of play in the last couple of years, and it has resulted in him having to contemplate using his Career Money Exemption. Players that are in the top 50 on the PGA Tour’s career money list have the option to use that as an exemption to allow them to stay on the PGA Tour when their play isn’t quite cutting it anymore. It’s an interesting situation, because Geoff has won some of the most prestigious tournaments in the game of golf, but unlike Tiger Woods, that hasn’t done him all that much justice. This leads me to believe that there are other factors to becoming a ‘professional sponsor’.

So, you might ask, what are those factors? The fact of the matter is, Tiger Woods dominated the game for over a decade, while players like Geoff had their winnings in a hot streak of maybe a year or two. These top players like Tiger, Mickelson, McIlroy, etc. have each been consistently playing well for a number of years, constantly pushing their name in the faces of golf fans everywhere. This realization from companies leads them to offer sponsorships, which is eventually how they are able to make so much money even when not playing golf, because they have established themselves as public figures and true celebrities instead of just professional golfers. When players like Geoff Ogilvy have a short period of success, and big companies don’t see any consistency in their popularity, they won’t waste their time knowing that they won’t stay popular for long. This is one of the main reasons that it is so difficult to make a true living out of a golf career, because in order to do so you have to consistently dominate the world of golf for a number of years to fully experience the luxury of those like Tiger Woods.

That being said, being an under-the-radar player on the PGA-Tour is still a good spot to be in. Although players like Geoff Ogilvy are starting to falter in terms of their income, they still have perks like the Career Money Exemption, and they still have great advantages from winning even just one or two tournaments. This leads me into my next topic regarding how skill is more important in development tours than it is on the PGA-Tour.

Pixar's Success with Audiences

Source: http://editorial.designtaxi.com

“$6.2 billion at the box office and score an average review rating of about 93% while creating modern masterpieces of animation” (Empire). It is evident that Pixar has mastered the ability to bring in audiences movie after movie. What makes Pixar so great at bringing in loyal viewers? I think Pixar is able to attract a loyal audience because their creativity, consistency, and passion is clearly evident. Both of these articles addresses my research topic because they directly analyze Pixar's methods as a company and why audiences gravitate towards their films. First I look to Empire, an online movie news and review website that covers current events within the entertainment industry. This source is reliable because it is a print magazine as well as an online magazine so it is current and also reliable enough to be published. The author is Helen O'hara and the article was published in 2010. It has many editors and has been in production for over twenty five years. The second source that I will be using is Time. Time is a printed and online magazine. It is reliable because it has a reputation for providing it’s readers with very credible information for over eighty-five years. This particular article is reliable because it is written by the Drucker Exchange. A group that reveals secrets about the success of businesses around the world.

Pixar is able to attract audiences film after film because they are creative. Pixar is a company that produces stories that have never been told before, and they do it in extremely new ways. Pixar originally started off as a software company, after playing with shadows of two dimensional and  three dimensional objects. By experimenting with these ideas, they were able to discover a different way of animation. This completely revolutionized the animation industry, making Pixar the creators of unique stories that were also told in a revolutionary way. Three dimensional animation was a completely new creative idea. “All three Pixar founders – Ed Catmull, John Lasseter, Steve Jobs – are smart people who understand the creative process better than anyone” (Empire). These were three of the main people in the beginnings of Pixar. With three legends of creativity leading the process, the products that Pixar produces will always be something that has never been seen before.
Consistency is something that attracts audiences. They like a consistent product that they can count on. Audiences count on Pixar to deliver a colorful story that is flawless and looks great. In the Time article, it explains a couple of Pixar’s methods of working with a new story. When Pixar is presented a new story from one of their employees, they all sit down and participate in something called “The Braintrust”. They deeply investigate this story and explain that “The film—not the filmmaker—is under the microscope” (Time). The fact that they have to explain that the film is under the microscope, not the filmmaker shows how much they investigate, and tear apart their proposed stories. They, as a company, want to provide audiences with a consistent story. Empire discusses the level of intensity of these “Braintrusts”. The article also goes on to say that that level of thought does not stop at just the story line. They say that there is an unceasing scrutiny of every level of the creative process” (Empire).
When audiences experience Pixar’s stories, the amount of passion that goes into their work is clearly evident. Pixar is able to have a loyal audience because they are able to show that they care about their work, and the audience responds very well to that. Pixar is a company that delivers stories to audiences across the world and to a wide range of ages. Pixar is so passionate about the stories that they develop, they made sure that employess working on "Finding Nemo learned to scuba dive, for instance, while the crew on Ratatouille mastered gourmet cooking” (Empire). The fact that Pixar would pay and insist that everyone working on projects have ample knowledge on the subject shows that they really do care about the product they produce and the message that is being given to their audiences.
In my future blog post I will be addressing the possible incentives for children to watch Pixar's films.

How to Get Discounts on Concert Tickets

Do you want to go to that sold out concert, front row, but don’t want to pay the outrageous ticket prices? Kelly B. Grant of Smart Money explains some of the tips and tricks in order to get these high demand tickets for a fraction of price that she has learned from research and hearing peoples first hand experiences with it.

  1. Join the fan club. Grant explains how “artists typically award early access to members of their fan clubs and email lists.” By joining the fan clubs you get the first look at seats for that event and don’t have to worry as much about prices being higher.
  2. Use special credit cards. Many ticket selling sites give you discounts or presale if you have a certain credit card. Grant informs us that one can “sweeten box-office prices by paying with accumulated credit card rewards instead of their own funds.”
  3. Buy from third-party Sellers. Grant says one should “use comparison engines such as FanSnap and SeatGeek that show offers from several sites at once.” If you are lucky you can get a great price. However, you have to be careful not to get scammed.
  4. Box Office. Use the box office to its potential. Many tickets are put away and given to the box office that are not available online. Grant also points out that “more seats often become available at the box office as the show approaches.”
  5. Purchase special passes. Grant says that many venue’s sell “lawn passes, which get holders general admission access to the venue's lawn during concerts that year.” This ultimately can save you hundreds of dollars depending on how many concerts you are planning on attending at that venue.
  6. Consider traveling to other venues. Many price “vary widely from city to city, depending on the size of the venue and fan base” Grant states. Even spending extra gas money to drive to a further city, you can sometimes save a large amount of money.
  7. Buy closer to concert date. Grant educates the reader that prices tend to fall in the last 48 to 72 hours before a show.” Buying closer to the concert date is risky but also worth it if you are able to get tickets.

These benefits are all great for getting more bang for your buck. However, is it really as simple as it sounds to gain these discounts?

How the Growth of the Golf Industry Has Benefited the Game

Map of Golf Courses in India
Maps of India
When somebody thinks of golf, they think about the timeless courses in the UK or the well manicured venues in the United States, but these are not only places that golf thrives. With golf’s continued growth in popularity since the late 20th century, people in other countries, such as India, have taken up the game as well. In July of 2010, Anil Mulchandani, an author for the magazine India Today, wrote an article called It's Tee Time: More and More Women Across Different Age Groups and Professions Are Taking Up Golfwhich depicts the drastic increase in popularity golf had with the residents of Ahmedabad. This goes to show how the growth of golf’s popularity has benefited the game by diversifying the people who play the game through introducing it to new regions and attracting more women towards the game.

By introducing  golf to new areas, the golf industry has allowed the game to grow. Sameer Sinha, the director of Kensville Golf and Country Club, in saying that the amount of golfers in Ahmedabad has increased by over 600% over the course of a few years. This huge growth in golfers shows the benefits of having the game introduced to new areas because new markets are introduced which allows the golf industry to make a larger profit. Therefore, by growing the global presence of the game, the golf industry is benefited through a growth in their market.
Similarly, the game of golf has also become more popular among women. This is once again depicted by Mulchandani when he cites the reasons that many women in India have picked up the game such as it being as a way to “ relax and unwind” or as a way to “[spend] time with family”. This new interest in golf from women can be seen worldwide and can be attributed to a number of factors, some of which being that more cultures hold women in equal esteem as men, most golf clubs allow women to play, and because more women are now working and therefore have the money to spend on golf. This growth of women's golf has benefited the game because more people are going out and playing which is supporting the sport.
Now that I know how the golf industry grew, I will research how this growth affected golf equipment and clothing manufacturers.

Why are athletes paid so much more than average worker?

Image result for huge sport contracts
Source: sbnation.com
Do you want to make at least $490,000 a year? That is the average minimum salary of every major professional sports league. To many people, they can only imagine and hope to ever make that amount of money. It will take many Americans many years to make $490,000, and professional athletes can make that in just a year. These sources, CBS Sports, SBNBA, , Forbes are reliable, because Forbes is a well known, and respected company. While the other two are sports sites that have a lot of experience in the way sports league operate. The major reason for the salaries of sports players continuing to go up is the increase of TV revenue due to new TV deals, because the popularity of sports is increasing . Also athletes are the best at what they do, and have been working at it for years. Many people envy these athletes and are jealous of their lives. However they have to work for years at getting to the pros and have to put in work year round to get to that point, where they can make that amount of money for playing a sport. Their careers average to about 5.5 years and after that have to live normal like us, which is difficult because they may not have a degree, because they put work into making it to the pros, not their education.

Many people believe that athletes make far too much money. There are role players in the NBA, such as Timofey Mozgov who just got a 4 year $64 M contract, while last postseason for the Cavs he rarely even saw the court. ( CBS Sports) That is $16 million for someone who played 76 out of 1,008 total minutes the Cavs played last postseason, because he was seen as not good enough. Granted now he is going to an inferior team, where he will likely start, but still $16 million is crazy. Especially when it is compared to a normal American, who makes on average just over $50,000 per year. A large part of this is because sports is an entertainment business.

While most normal workers work to provide basic necessities we need, but do not value as much as something that we enjoy, such as entertainment. People are willing to pay a high amount for really just an experience, $100 and up for pretty much every sport except baseball. These athletes work in entertainment, they are a part of people’s lives. “For many, professional sports events are the transcendent experience in  contemporary western culture.  Sports is filled with myths-wonderful stories of heroic performances and courage under pressure.” (CBS Sports, 2014) Their performance has an impact on people’s entertainment, if a team is losing they are not enjoying watching that and are not entertained by the team, often times it will actually affect someone’s mood. That is why according to CBS Sports, “TV revenue increased from $970 M to $2.67 B,” because people are willing to pay a lot to be entertained. Extra revenue for the league, extra revenue for the players. So the salaries of these players increases significantly, because TV revenue increased significantly.

The difference between an average American worker, and athletes is how good they are at what they do. These athletes in pro sports are the best at what they do, so they have earned the right be payed the best. An average American worker is likely very good at what they do, but they are not the best in the world at what they do. It is common to see better workers paid better wages everywhere in America, so that is why those who make it to the pros are paid the better wages. Athletes in the minor leagues tend to be paid about the average American salary of around $50,000 per year. That is how normal American jobs work, those who are not as good do not get paid as much. However in most cases the best does not make over $10 million usually. One thing implemented in most sports is a salary cap and floor, designed to prevent teams from being too good and signing all the best players, and from being too bad to just tank for the top picks in the draft. With an increase in TV revenue, the salary cap and floor goes up, so the players get the same percentage of league revenue through the salaries as before TV revenue spike. “Add a provision negotiated by Hunter requiring teams to spend at least 90 percent of the cap -- creating a payroll floor of $85 million -- and you have an unprecedented spending spree.” (SB Nation, 2016) This forces teams to pay more to their players, so average players are paid like stars. If a company has a large increase in revenue, often times then the salary of the workers will go up, which is what happened here, the league revenue went up so the players salary went up. So workers in sports work for companies (leagues) that tend to produce a lot more revenue than normal businesses, so their salary is much higher than the average American worker.

Future Research Question: Are athletes overpaid?

What is Skiing and why it is Medically good for you.

Source : www.familyskitrips.com/

Skiing is a sport like soccer, swimming, running, etc. But the difference is that it is mostly a recreational sport.  Alpine Skiing which is more commonly known as downhill skiing, it is by far the most popular of the types and attract a lot of tourists to Europe, North America, Australia, etc.  Alpine skiing is not the only type of skiing, there are many types like back country skiing, extreme skiing, racing, etc.   Although skiing is a sport and attract a lot tourist in the winter skiing, it has a lot medical benefits to the mental and physical health of the skier. In Top 10 Health Benefits of Skiing by Health Fitness Revolution and The Health Benefits of Downhill Skiing by Fitday Editor, they explain the many benefits of skiing which are the following:

  1. Skiing improves your ability to move and feel different body parts. The ability to move and feel different body parts moving weakens with age.  Skiing which uses this ability quite often and even strengthens it.  Also skiing needs a lot of balancing and coordinate which also enhances this ability.
  2. Strengthens your body in more than one place.
    1. Bones and joints: When skiing  “you are preventing knee damage, osteoporosis and increasing your proprioceptive strength.”.  Your knees are strengthened due to the amount of body weight and tension there getting while you ski which strengthens your joints and the bone. This can decrease joint pain later on in life.
    2. Lower body muscles: Skiing “puts you in a constant squat position, it works your inner and outer thighs, hamstrings, quads and glutes.”. You will probably feel the ache in your legs when you go to bed and most likely the next day.
  3. Skiing increases your cardiovascular endurance. The movement of skiing down a slope helps burn calories and improves weight loss due to the exercise.   Your heart rate will also increase, because in the end of the day it is a physical sport.  Walking up the slope instead of a ski lift(even if it is exhausting and tiring) is a very good exercise for your heart and lungs.  Your adrenaline will increase while skiing because your body releases it into the bloodstream boosting your overall mood during skiing.  All this helps improve one’s physical health and makes one more happy on the slope.
  4. Improves one’s flexibility, balance, core strength and agility.  Stability is one of the key things in skiing. Your leg muscles make adjustments all the time while skiing for balance to stay upright.  Skiing “challenges your balance and agility, helping you fend off slips and falls as you age”.   The skiing technique/position is in a slight squatting position which improves your core strength.  All of these things, especially flexibility, “will help you avoid muscle strains and sprains.”

Why Practice Hot Yoga?

Hot Yoga is a trending workout that is good for you due to many things.  According to Lisa Mitchell, a hot yoga instructor and author of the article, “5 Reasons to Practice Hot yoga,” hot yoga has numerous benefits.  In order to become a hot yoga instructor you must go through teacher training that helps you learn about the body and Lisa Mitchell also has first hand experience with hot yoga, making her a reliable source for learning about this exercise option.  Hot yoga is worthy of the cost because of the numerous reasons, such as the improved flexibility, metabolism and complexion, as to why everyone should get involved in it.

One may wonder what the difference is between hot yoga and regular yoga, and why they matter. However, according to Mitchell, “Hot yoga has become a broad term referring to any form of yoga that is practiced in a room that is heated to approximately 85 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit, with humidity typically at 40-60 percent.” While hot yoga is in a heated room, regular yoga is not. By being in a heated room, your body becomes looser and in turn you are able to stretch more and go into more extreme poses than if your body is not warm.

Furthermore, “practicing yoga in a heated room has similar effects to sitting in a sauna. The heat increases pulse rate and metabolism, allowing your blood vessels to become more flexible.” So, while the heat helps your flexibility, it also helps your metabolism increase speed, which in turn has a positive effect on your body and its processes.

A final reason why hot yoga is better is because of the massive amount of sweat your body releases. As mentioned in Mitchell’s article, when you sweat a lot your body releases toxins and it benefits your skin by giving you a “after-yoga glow.” Sweating opens your pores, also alleviating acne symptoms after class. By practicing yoga in the heat versus not, your body sees a lot more benefits internally and externally.

Not only does the heat matter, but the practice itself. According to Mitchell’s article, “Yoga is designed to relieve stress and promote connection of the mind, body and spirit. However, practicing hot yoga requires you to push even further beyond your edge and place of comfort.” So, if one is looking for an exercise that will also help them manage their stress, let go of some worries, and be more positive in their everyday life, hot yoga will help them do this while still giving them a physical push. Yoga has always been seen as “peaceful,” but add in the actual practicing of hot yoga and not only do you find internal peace, but also a great workout while you are at it. Also, Mitchell mentions that, “your body will become better equipped to fight infection with a hot yoga practice.” Since hot yoga is helping your body fight infection, it in turn is helping you be a healthier person overall. If we are able to avoid getting sick, we are able to avoid the threat of becoming weak from these illnesses or overall less healthy.

Hot yoga can help you become more peaceful in your mind and improve your physical being and overall health. Hot yoga is doing your body and mind good while still being fun because of the fun challenges you put your body through - such as poses, instead of doing boring exercises that only help you physically, rather than both mentally and physically at the same time.

YOU’LL NEVER BELIEVE HOW YOUR BRAIN THINKS

Source: http://www.techdigest.tv
Two people take a test, both studied for the same amount of time and know just the same. But when they both got to a question they don’t know the answer for, that is where they split on their choices. One student takes the safe route and thinks through what they know and gets an answer and hopes its right. But, for the other student, they choose to try their luck with cheating off the person next to him. That is the difference between them, and it could be a sign that student 2 might want to see the doctor, and that is because he might have a brain injury.
  1. A person’s mind uses two different pieces that do the job independently then put it together to make the proper decision in the place. When we find out what part of the brain does each, we can help deal with the people that have mental impairments.
  2. In a article entitled Making Decisions: How your brain thinks, A study was conducted at the University of Iowa to find out that type of information by reviewing data on brain lesions from scans from the past 30 years to find out just what areas were being affected.
  3. Once they finished looking through the data, they came to the conclusion that the two different portions of the brain that are being affected are the vmPFC and dlPFC.
  4. They found that impairment to the dlPFC causes problems with people’s choices as well as separating two contradicting ideas such as the word red being colored green.
  5. The other impairment to the vmPFC can lead to problems with the actual assessment of the risk of a situation, which they tested for by telling people that two sets of cards have different odds of them winning. For the test, deck 1 had a 80% chance that it would be a right card but would win them 10 dollars, whereas deck 2 would only have a 20% of the right card but would win them 100 dollars. Different people would constantly pick the riskier decision rather than just going with the more safe option.
  6. This finding, although it re enforces some information we already had, can lead to helping with finding the roots of different mental disorders, as well leading to new treatments for them.
  7. This is finding, in my eyes, is a huge step in the way we can treat and assist those who have gone through some kind of mental issues, such as clinical depression, ADHD, and maybe even autism.
All in all, this discovering can lead to findings in the way we make our choices, as well as finding the causes to some of our common mental disorders. The idea of understanding our choices and how we make them can assist the research of why we purchase what we do. So therefore, student 2 might want to push his check up to a closer date, cause it may just show something bigger that needs to be addressed.
