“$6.2 billion at the box office and score an average review rating of about 93% while creating modern masterpieces of animation” (Empire). It is evident that Pixar has mastered the ability to bring in audiences movie after movie. What makes Pixar so great at bringing in loyal viewers? I think Pixar is able to attract a loyal audience because their creativity, consistency, and passion is clearly evident. Both of these articles addresses my research topic because they directly analyze Pixar's methods as a company and why audiences gravitate towards their films. First I look to Empire, an online movie news and review website that covers current events within the entertainment industry. This source is reliable because it is a print magazine as well as an online magazine so it is current and also reliable enough to be published. The author is Helen O'hara and the article was published in 2010. It has many editors and has been in production for over twenty five years. The second source that I will be using is Time. Time is a printed and online magazine. It is reliable because it has a reputation for providing it’s readers with very credible information for over eighty-five years. This particular article is reliable because it is written by the Drucker Exchange. A group that reveals secrets about the success of businesses around the world.
Pixar is able to attract audiences film after film because they are creative. Pixar is a company that produces stories that have never been told before, and they do it in extremely new ways. Pixar originally started off as a software company, after playing with shadows of two dimensional and three dimensional objects. By experimenting with these ideas, they were able to discover a different way of animation. This completely revolutionized the animation industry, making Pixar the creators of unique stories that were also told in a revolutionary way. Three dimensional animation was a completely new creative idea. “All three Pixar founders – Ed Catmull, John Lasseter, Steve Jobs – are smart people who understand the creative process better than anyone” (Empire). These were three of the main people in the beginnings of Pixar. With three legends of creativity leading the process, the products that Pixar produces will always be something that has never been seen before.
Consistency is something that attracts audiences. They like a consistent product that they can count on. Audiences count on Pixar to deliver a colorful story that is flawless and looks great. In the Time article, it explains a couple of Pixar’s methods of working with a new story. When Pixar is presented a new story from one of their employees, they all sit down and participate in something called “The Braintrust”. They deeply investigate this story and explain that “The film—not the filmmaker—is under the microscope” (Time). The fact that they have to explain that the film is under the microscope, not the filmmaker shows how much they investigate, and tear apart their proposed stories. They, as a company, want to provide audiences with a consistent story. Empire discusses the level of intensity of these “Braintrusts”. The article also goes on to say that that level of thought does not stop at just the story line. They say that there is an “unceasing scrutiny of every level of the creative process” (Empire).
When audiences experience Pixar’s stories, the amount of passion that goes into their work is clearly evident. Pixar is able to have a loyal audience because they are able to show that they care about their work, and the audience responds very well to that. Pixar is a company that delivers stories to audiences across the world and to a wide range of ages. Pixar is so passionate about the stories that they develop, they made sure that employess working on "Finding Nemo learned to scuba dive, for instance, while the crew on Ratatouille mastered gourmet cooking” (Empire). The fact that Pixar would pay and insist that everyone working on projects have ample knowledge on the subject shows that they really do care about the product they produce and the message that is being given to their audiences.
In my future blog post I will be addressing the possible incentives for children to watch Pixar's films.
