Scalpers
Many people have dealt with the third-party sellers and know that it can be annoying. Do you ever wonder how these websites get the tickets so quickly? Puckett of USA Today explains the process these websites go through to obtain tickets quickly and take advantage of its customers.
These third-party sellers are hiring people that are known as “Scalpers.” Scalpers are known for obtaining the tickets sold for sporting event, concert, and theater tickets at much higher prices than what they would originally sell for. Puckett points out that one way third-party sellers obtain tickets quickly is that they pay these people to sleep outside of venues the night before tickets go on sale so they are first in line at the box office. Dennis Petrullo, general manager of the Yum! Center in Louisville, points out that “the first 10 people in line are going to be scalpers.” They are being paid money to do this for the third-party sellers. This is only one way that they are obtaining these tickets so quickly.
Another way that they get these tickets is that they have memberships to the fan clubs of many artists that are high in popularity. Many of these scalpers buy the tickets during presale through fan clubs so they can get prime seating and sell it for a larger profit. The article states, “artists dictate how many seats go to their fan clubs” meaning they are very limited and a lot of times are some of the best seats in the venue. Scalpers take advantage of this benefit knowing that spending the fee for the fan club will ultimately give them larger profits making up for those fees. Scalpers are strategic and smart as to how they can make the most profit for themselves.
