Practically everyone who lives in the United States has heard of the Susan G. Komen walk for breast cancer. This walk has spread awareness about breast cancer and raised millions of dollars—just from people walking 60 miles. According to the Susan G. Komen website this walk has raised $800,000,000 and has 3 million survivors and counting. I believe that these 60-mile walks are one of the best ways to spread cancer awareness and to raise money because it gets people involved and boosts the moral of the patients.
Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancerous death from women age 20-60. In 2012, approximately 1.7 million people were diagnosed with breast cancer. Facts like these are what gives the Susan G. Komen institute an incentive to research breast cancer. In the Susan G. Komen website, it said “Research is one of our best weapons against breast cancer”, that is why it is essential people participate in the Susan G. Komen walk.
The Susan G. Komen walk is a 60-mile walk that is hosted in various cities and states and the purpose is to raise money that goes to awareness and research for breast cancer. According to the Susan G. Komen website “The combination of science, education, and direct help to people facing breast cancer has lead to a 37% decline in mortality from 1990 to 2013”. This shows that through the money this company has made they have been able to research and spread the word about breast cancer. Most people that participate in this walk have a friend or relative that is facing breast cancer. The fact that the patient's family and friends are getting involved to help improves the patient’s social support. According to the Susan G. Komen website, social support can reduce anxiety, depression, fatigue and other horrible things that many patients suffer through. Social support can also improve a patient’s mood, self-image, their ability to cope with stress, and many other benefits that cancer-free people take for granted. Simple things such as social support can immensely improve a patient's health. These walks let the patients know that they are cared for and that many people are working hard to research a cure for breast cancer.
